Women, peace and security

The UN Security Council has repeatedly stated that the needs of women must always be considered in times of conflict, as well as women’s right to equal participation in all efforts for peace.

UN Security Council Resolution 1325 was adopted unanimously in October 2000. It was the first formal document from the Security Council on women, peace and security. Some ten other resolutions have followed. These resolutions now make up the international women, peace and security agenda.

The agenda states that women, who make up half of the world’s population, have the right to participate actively in efforts for peace. Gender-based and sexual violence in times of conflict must be mitigated, and women’s rights protected. All international efforts for peace must have a gender equality perspective.

FBA is Sweden’s expert agency for the implementation of the agenda for women, peace and security.

What does the FBA do?

In 2020, we were tasked by the Swedish Government to establish a scholarship aimed at supporting the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on women, peace and security.

Gender Assessment of the 2021 Electoral Process in Puntland

On October 25, 2021, Puntland became the first federal member state in Somalia to hold democratic elections to district councils. “One person one vote” elections were conducted in three “early districts” of Eyl, Ufeyn and Qardho. In addition to their historic significance, these elections offer an important opportunity to learn lessons, not least when it comes to the promotion of gender equality and the political participation of women.
