Secondments to peace operations

FBA seconds civilian personnel to international peace operations that Sweden contributes to. FBA only deploys personnel of Swedish nationality. Secondments are an important part of FBA’s work for peace, security and development.

FBA is tasked by the Swedish government to second civilian Swedish personnel to peace operations led by the EU, UN and OSCE, and to the head quarters of those organizations, from where the peace operations are being planned and managed.

The map above shows where we currently have deployed staff.

The Swedish government has also decided that FBA is to deploy staff working within our areas of expertise.

The Swedish Police Authority, the Swedish Prosecution Authority, the Swedish National Courts Administration, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency also contribute with civilian Swedish personnel, working within other areas.

In addition, Sweden contributes with military personnel to international peace operations, through the Swedish Armed Forces.

All Swedes on secondment to international peace operations, both military and civilian staff, are representatives of Sweden abroad and part of Sweden’s efforts for international peace, security and development.

Since 2018, Fredrik Wesslau has been seconded by FBA to the EU advisory mission in Ukraine ­(EUAM). In the role as Deputy Head of Mission, he is part of leading the organization's daily work and strategic direction.

Gender Assessment of the 2021 Electoral Process in Puntland

On October 25, 2021, Puntland became the first federal member state in Somalia to hold democratic elections to district councils. “One person one vote” elections were conducted in three “early districts” of Eyl, Ufeyn and Qardho. In addition to their historic significance, these elections offer an important opportunity to learn lessons, not least when it comes to the promotion of gender equality and the political participation of women.
